Something with a brick/stone/masonry/concrete surround is good because it holds the heat longer and releases it after the fire has gone out: thermal mass!  I also like the potential to sit on the hearth of this one.

I do also like it when they're inset into the wall, rather than poking out into it and taking up half your living room (and also more likely to be tripped over).  (Otherwise this image isn't particularly exciting).

A woodburner I DON'T like.  I hate the ones that have no surround, no mantelpiece, that look like they're pretending to be a TV or something.
