Though apparently a mantlepiece alone isn't enough to stop it looking... wrong somehow.  Would tiles have fixed it?  Quite possibly, though I think maybe these flush ones just don't work for me at all.

Something with a brick/stone/masonry/concrete surround is good because it holds the heat longer and releases it after the fire has gone out: thermal mass!  I also like the potential to sit on the hearth of this one.

But then again I do also like decoration.  So I like this one, even though it doesn't look like it was designed by NASA.

I do also like it when they're inset into the wall, rather than poking out into it and taking up half your living room (and also more likely to be tripped over).  (Otherwise this image isn't particularly exciting).

A woodburner I DON'T like.  I hate the ones that have no surround, no mantelpiece, that look like they're pretending to be a TV or something.
