The largest covered public square in Europe is the Great Court at the British Museum in London. The inner courtyard was transformed by the design by Foster and Partners. It was opened on 6 December 2000 by Her Majesty the Queen.
The Globe Theatre, that opened in 1997, a modern day replica of Shakespeare’s original Globe theatre, has special permission to have a thatched roof. After The Great Fire of London in 1666, thatched roofs were banned in London and the ban is still in place today.
