This engraving of William Cartwright was printed in London in 1651. Leaning on and surrounded by his book, Cartwright is projected as a thoughtful man of learning. But his books are shelved not spine-out, in the modern mode, but with their fore-edges facing out - a common practice in 16th and 17th century Europe.
