"Ste. Croix Habitation" by Samuel de Champlain (1613) - "The settlement of Du Gua de Monts and Champlain at Île Sainte-Croix. Just one rather early, harsh winter was enough to persuade them to move this colony to the site of Port-Royal. The insularity, which had initially provided a sense of security, quickly turned into a nightmare when the well froze, the low supply of firewood and food ran out, and scurvy claimed its victims."
