Still life by Samuel Peploe.  Artdaily.org - The First Art Newspaper on the Net. In this painting Peploe has used a plain background compared to his other ones which usually had a patterned wallpaper I'm the background. I think he did this because it brings out the flowers in the vase a bit more because a patterned background would have covered them up. Peploe has also used a lot of red in the picture
