St Mary Street in Cardiff derives its name from the old parish church which is thought to have dated from the 11th century  which was washed away in the great flood of 1607. In 1910, an old Cardiffian recalled the St Mary Street of his youth: “It was known as ‘The Parish’. The river came right round the west side of the street  flowed over the spot nowoccupied by the Royal Hotel.” The street was pedestrianised  had a makeover in 2011, with many of the bus being diverted into Westgate Street.
