1 April 1918 saw the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) to form the Royal Air Force (RAF). It now has its place beside the British navy and army as a separate military service.
Gladiator (Gloster)-Gloster Gladiators also flew against Italian and in North Africa, East Africa and Greece. South African Marmaduke Pattle was the top Gladiator ace with 15 victories. 747 Gloster Gladiators were built.
