Researchers have turned male mice into females using DNA that was previous considered 'junk'. Snipping out a small region of DNA previously considered to be 'junk' leads to male mice developing ovaries instead of testes researchers at the Francis Crick Institute have found. The finding could lead to treatments for sexual development disorders in humans they say. You can read more about this and other important discoveries in the Summer issue of BBC Focus magazine on sale on Thursday…

This is the moment an Utila spiny-tailed iguana first broke through its inch-long shell at Bristol Zoo Gardens after 74 days in an incubator. It was followed by a second iguana. It's the first time this critically endangered species has been bred successfully at the zoo since 2011. It was once considered to be one of the rarest iguanas in existence. The young iguanas are now around 20cm long and will grow to up to 80cm long on a diet of vegetation and small insects. Currently this…

Uncommonly fair skies over the British Isles captured by @Nasa_eo on June 27 2018. #repost @nasa_eo: Islands tend to have a lot of cloud cover thanks to the moisture all around them. Landmasses in middle latitudes also tend to be cloudier than other parts of the planet. And the intersections between different atmospheric circulation patterns can lead to a lot of cloud cover. The United Kingdom and Ireland fit all of those categories and they are among the cloudiest places on Earth. Air…

Sure Pickford's doing well but if England wants some real fire power in goal tomorrow night they need the mantis shrimp. This peacock mantis shrimp might only be 10cm long but with its specialised 'clubs' it can punch through water with enough force to cause a series of tiny explosions. There might be a few issues though - some species use their sharp forelimbs to stab prey and we're not sure what rules FIFA has in place for punctured balls. Getty…

Check out this Decken's sifaka lemur hanging out in the Grand Tsingy in Madagascar - an incredible forest of limestone spires. In Malagasy 'tsingy' means 'where one cannot walk barefoot'. The Grand Tsingy is largest stretch of tsingy forest on Earth lying across 375600 acres with some rock pinnacles reaching 2600 feet. NASA's solved a mystery that's been puzzling scientists for some time: #repost from NASA: Mystery solved! A new study explains why the Tracy and Heilprin glaciers which flow side by side into Inglefield Gulf in northwest Greenland are melting at radically different rates. Using ocean data from our Oceans Melting Greenland campaign the study documents a plume of warm water flowing up Tracy's underwater face and a much colder plume in front of Heilprin. Scientists have assumed plumes like…

Lion's mane jellyfish can grow to over 30 feet in length and have over 1000 tentacles all with powerful stinging barbs. It's the largest species of jellyfish that we know about but don't worry you're unlikely to run into one on your summer holiday. They're generally contained to the cold waters of the Arctic north Atlantic and northern Pacific oceans although they do wander into the English Channel and Irish Sea. In 1870 the largest-ever recorded specimen was found washed up on the shore…

Here monarch butterflies bask in the sun on a pine tree in the mountains of Mexico where they overwinter. You'll find monarchs on every continent except Antarctica but it's the North American variety that interests scientists the most. Each year monarchs from the colder parts of the USA and Canada migrate to Mexico in search of warmer weather and their offspring navigate back a journey of over 3000 km. Their orange colour isn't just for decoration - it tells predators they're poisonous…
