Etching is the process scratching indentations onto a surface to create a pattern that the ink would set into. Printing the plate is done by covering the surface with printing ink, then rubbing the ink off the surface with tarlatan cloth or newsprint, leaving ink in the roughened areas and lines.

Etching is the process of using strong acid to burn lines and images onto a zinc plate. Ink is then added to the plate, which is run through a press with paper, resulting in a print.
