V&A Mantua - 1735-45. In the V&A's notes they say the realistic weaving effect of the flowers in this pattern - the way the Chanelle (think this is accurate) twists have been used to create depth and such, all point to the dating of this gown. Worth a read if you're interested. Textile Design, Floral Design, 18th Century Gown, Brown Silk, Silk Brocade, Victoria And Albert, Fabric Trim

This section of the gown and how it develops throughout the 18th c is very interesting to us - but at this stage of the fashion, the wide train folds back to the back of the gown and is looped and either pinned or sewn into shape to create a kind of bow at the back. 18th Century Dresses, 18th Century Fashion, 19th Century, Mega Fashion, Fashion Beauty, Period Outfit, Historical Clothing, Female Clothing

A woman's formal day ensemble ca 1735-1740. The mantua evolved from its informal version in the late 17th century. By this period, the construction is more structured and the once flowing train fixed in a pinned up position. The silk design represents an early example of the new patterns of the 1730s, which emphasized the three-dimensional nature of the forms. Fabric woven of brown silk, brocaded in floral design with rust, maroon, blue floss and chenille, at Spitalfields ca 1732.
