Double Pinwheel String Quilt

I finished the double pinwheel string quilt top this week! Writing that sentence reminds me of the scene in the movie The Jerk when Steve Martin exclaims, "The new phone book is here! The new phone book is here!" Speaking of which, I could use a new phone book, seeing as I ripped out 32 pages of mine for this string quilt. But I do feel kind of giddy that it's done. And while it would be inappropriate for me to run down the block making silly proclamations about what some would consider…

Crazy quilt block - stitch and flip method

Stitch and Flip, Mittens, and Chopped Salad

Recently, I am part of a quilting group with some sewing friends in my area. My friend, Lori, e-mailed some local, fellow sewers about starting a monthly group. Basically, we take turns hosting and showcase a favorite block. There are enough of us to get through the whole year with everyone taking one month. Lori kicked off the first month with a crazy quilt block involving a stitch and flip technique. Isn't this great? The blocks are 14" finished. My block! I decided to get out my blue…

TheEclecticAbuela: Creating a String Quilt

Creating a String Quilt

Creating A String Quilt String Quilts have a long tradition. Since they use small strips (strings) of fabric, they are a good use for fabrics left over from other projects. Assembling a string quilt isn’t hard—in fact, if you like playing with fabric, it is a lot of fun. I can’t tell you how many yards of fabrics you need, I’m afraid—this is a project where you pull out the scraps and create as you go. Before beginning, think about the type of block you want. For this demonstration, I was…

Hyacinth Quilt Designs

Let's start with my latest quilt finish! This inspiration for this quilt was Fabric Mutt, Heidi's Big Bear Cabin quilt . I drafted a smaller block and set them on point with some background sashing and cornerstones. It was a great quilt to use up some scraps and fit my planned scrappiness style. I quilted it simply with vertical straight lines. In other news, I've joined the Alison Glass Stitch Club. It's a 6 month program where a new hand stitching technique and project is featured each…

Em's Scrapbag: My Wonky Rose Garden is a Wrap

Home - Aunt Ems Quilts

I've had so much fun making this quilt. It was mindless scrappy sewing. It doesn't get much better than that. A tutorial for making these funky roses can be found here. I quilted roses in each of the roses and then leaves and vines everywhere else. I bound it with a blue fabric I found in my stash. I think it makes a lovely backdrop for my flower/herb garden. I'm lovin' how well my little garden has done this season and will be sad to see it go. I'm planning on bringing the herbs inside. I…
