A Wardley Map

I was recently asked what do you call the maps (see figure 1) that are produced by the mapping technique I developed? Figure 1 Are they Digital roadmaps? Product roadmaps? Strategy maps? Chessboards for business? First, the maps cover activities, practices and data and aren't limited to a specific field such as technology. They can be used to identify common services, differences, areas of efficiency, potential strategic gameplay, solve communication issues and ... a long list. Hence all the…

What's in a Wardley Map and the need for a cheat sheet.

A map has an anchor. In chess, it's the board. In geographical maps it's the compass. In a Wardley map, it's the user need (of course, I'm assuming you've actually described the user journey and know what those needs are). A map has position (relative to the anchor) and the ability to show movement. In Chess, it's the position of pieces on the board and where they can move to. In geographical maps, it's the position relative to compass setting (northwest of here or in more advanced forms…

What is Wardley Mapping? This is about my journey, from a newly-minted yet confused CEO caught like a rabbit staring helpless into the oncoming headlights of change - to being voted one of the most influential people in IT within the UK. It took me a decade to first develop the techniques that I'm going to describe and a further 10 years to gain confidence with them through practice.

What makes a map?

Topographical intelligence is ultimately a mechanism of communication and learning, but what makes a good map? The first thing a map has to be is visual and context specific. Figure 1 - Visual & Context Specific. But then any box and wire diagram is visual and context specific. However that isn't enough to learn. In order to understand a context and to learn from it (whether with a chess board or a geographical map) then you need to have position and movement of the pieces on the map…

Finding a new purpose

It was 2007, I was at home and I was unemployed. I twiddled my thumbs for a couple of days, did some DIY and then set about thinking on my future. This is code for watching my bank balance plummet…

Looking at Amazon and Lumberyard a bit more.

Last time I wrote about Amazon and gaming and since that post Phil Trease produced a very nice map on Lumberyard which I've blatantly stolen and added here. Figure 1 - Phil Trease's map Now the beauty of a map, is that I can challenge it e.g. the assumptions made, the components used. I also happened to listen to @Cheeseplus provide some very useful commentary. So, I decided to have a bash myself and redo that map. A few things :- 1) the user need really should start with entertainment which…
