Misericords were carvings underneath the seats of the choir stalls in medieval churches and hence featured many secular and pagan themes such as the green man. This carving is based on a 15th century misericord in Dunblane Cathedral, Scotland. The green man was a symbol of regeneration and oneness with the earth.
