John Shelley

British painter, born 1938 in Margate, Kent. Studied at Wimbledon School of Art 1953-8 and Slade School of Fine Art 1958. Samuel Palmer and Stanley Spencer are both influences. Shelley recalls meeting Spencer in Cookham in the 1950s: "We were on a student trip, and we all descended upon him as he was painting in the churchyard. He was very nice and offered me a Spangle."
