Duke Kahanamoku. For being a legendary surfer and 3 time gold medalist while overcoming cultural obstacles of his time. Well loved by not only Hawaiians, but people all over the world.

Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku was a Hawaiian swimmer, actor, lawman, early beach volleyball player and businessman credited with spreading the sport of surfing. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. He made surfing huge!

From 1912 to 1932, Duke Kahanamoku won five Olympic medals, including three golds in swimming. He was sheriff of Honolulu from 1934 to 1960 and was the official greeter for the state of Hawai'i from 1960 until he died in 1968. This photo was taken in August 1950.
