That Day - When Writing Comes from Many Places

Milkweed Plants on Raiber Road Photo by Amy LV Students - The picture you see above is of a little stand of milkweed plants on our road. Early in August, my husband and I took a walk down the road and counted monarch caterpillars on the underside of the leaves. I went back a couple of weeks later to look for chrysalises, but I did not see any, and I'm still wondering if those caterpillars turned to butterflies just a few yards away from our home. I smile to remember that weeks-ago-walk, just…

Shadow Show - Poems About What We Always Do

Hand, Wall, Light, Shadow Photo by Amy LV Students - We all have favorite habits that become regular parts of our lives, small rituals and routines that tie one day to the next, that make us who we are. Today's poem is about something that many children (and adults) like to do - make hand shadows! Making hand shadows feels like a game between person, light, and wall, and today's poem celebrates this simple way to enjoy dusk or night. This verse is made up of four quatrains (four line…

My Birthday - Poems about Occasions

Calendar Photo by Amy LV Happy birthday to all leap year babies! Students - Today's poem is a holiday poem, a math poem, and a riddle poem! The other day, when I sat down to write, I got thinking about what a special year this is...leap year! I stopped to think about those with birthdays on February 29 and how they can only celebrate their true birth date every four years. Writing a math riddle poem is a neat little exercise. Just come up with a math problem in your head (or on paper) and…

Writing Grows from Questions We Carry: A Voting Poem

Students - Above today's poem, you see a question. I cut and pasted the image from Twitter, where Mrs. Miller's fourth graders at Glacier Ridge Elementary School in Dublin, Ohio often share their learning and questions. When I first read their question, it felt like a piano had fallen from the sky onto my head. Would I write about the election? Why had I not already written about the election? What would I say? I have strong opinions about this election, so how could I write a poem about the…

Celebrating Simple, Humble Objects with Our Words

Winter Projects Photo by Amy LV Students - Today's poem is a celebration of simple mittens. I love mittens, I love yarn, and I love the short 'i' sound. And so today's small temple of words comes together around these three loves. Sometimes in life, one goes through times of despair and worry, grumpiness and uncertainty. I've been feeling these things lately, and so this week I decided to turn my attention toward humble objects that bring me and the world small measures of joy and beauty…

Mother's Day - Writing Presents for Those We Love

Debby Ludwig and Me 1995 Photo by Wedding Photographer (?) Students - Mother's Day is Sunday! And today's poem is dedicated to my own wonderful mother, Debby Ludwig, a great human being, retired fourth grade teacher, and inspiration to me. I am very lucky to be her child and to share her with my wonderful sister Heidi. Holidays are a beautiful time to pick up your pen and write a tribute poem or a letter to someone you love. And we moms love the things that our children make so much. Words…
