A golden #pothos vine has arrived courtesy of the #plantpostclub from @geo_fleur in a fabulous ceramic pot which we can use for a succulent once the pothos outgrows it's space. Which it will. Also known as Devils Ivy (Epipremnum aureus) as it's apparently impossible to kill. Well we'll see about that won't we? I do like a challenge. #todaysgoodthing #botanicalpickmeup #aslowmoment #underthefloralspell #thebotanicalseries #liveauthentic #allthingsbotanical #seekthesimplicity #aquietstyle…

Yesterday's sunshine made it feel marvellously spring-like; at least once the wind had died down. This morning we're waking to the sound of earlier risers scraping their windscreens looks like a two hat day is before us! Here's Wendy Jane looking good! My winter pelargonium care skills are on the up! Just don't ask me about Lord Bute who spent most of the winter just outside the back door going "I'm fine I don't need to come in it's not even cold!" until a couple of days ago. looks a bit shifty Ahem. Just don't tell @fibrex_nurseries. Heather was almost thinking of taking me off the naughty list. Talking of Fibrex the home of the national collection of pellies (and ivies along with ferns and more) they're…

Just posted to the blog a review of this wonderful book on 14 head gardeners in 13 of the UK's top gardens (yes one of the gardens has two head gardeners!). Beautifully written by Ambra Edwards you may have seen some of the fantastic photography by @charlie_hopkinson_photographer already in your Instagram feeds. It's definitely worth getting hold of a copy if you're interested in the personalities behind the scenes in some of our most loved gardens. Link in bio. #bookreview #gardeningbooks…

I think we must have some very fat birds around this winter. They've been feasting on rose hips and berries like they're going out of fashion and it's not as if the ground has been frozen too hard for them to get to worms or the usual little critters they enjoy. So it's quite rare to find a good crop of berries and I was pleased to come across this Cotoneaster horizontalis that still had almost a full complement! Probably not for much longer. Especially if the birds have Instagram…

Still deep in winter but today we have blue skies and pale sun and I'm enjoying both the therapy of clearing away last year's sunflowers (left so long for the birds to munch on the seeds) and the wonderful tactile qualities of every part of this plant. The seed heads rightly attract attention but the ribbed and hairy stems glistening in the morning sun deserve a moment or two of admiration. And they're filled with the most fabulous light marshmallow-like pith which is like no substance I've…

I may not yet have an Alocasia for the #houseplant collection but I can enjoy the gorgeous leaves of its relative in the garden. This is Arum italicum subsp. italicum 'Marmoratum' which is a bit of a mouthful tbh. You can just think of it as the pretty Lords and Ladies which is one of its common names Along with a whole host of other rude names due to the shape of its flower. Actually all members of the Araceae family have the same kind of flower including monsteras which we don't often see…

Swapped the garden fork for a tenon saw hammer and nails for a while. The moulding strips that held the glass into this #greenhouse door had rotted completely in places and this big window was threatening to fall out sometimes only the handle keeping it in. A little job made only slightly more complicated by the realisation that the whole structure's sagged slightly and the door's no longer square! Sorted now just in time for chillis. . #mystoryoflight #peninpractice #olympusuk…

Ferny cow parsley foliage and a patch of snowdrops rising out of the leaf litter (which is prodigious this garden backs onto the village's little wood). One of the many things I love about Friday afternoon's garden is that even in the bits where no one really goes there's always something rather wonderful going on. . #mystoryoflight #peninpractice #olympusuk #tostandandstare #winter #hellojanuary #ihavethisthingfordarkness #fb

January gloom continues thank heaven for the #hedgerows bustling with bird life in their upper stories with voles and mice and shrews down below and invertebrates throughout. Every yard of mixed hedging is a bustling with activity and I'm quite fickle when it comes to deciding upon my favourite plant within the russet tapestry. Today these beech leaves won me over holding tight to their twigs all winter long till the new growth pushes them off in the spring. For now they look like so many…

I was feeling so left out that everyone's hellebores were opening before mine so pleased to find this little chap doing his best for me. Who knew #fomo could extend to your flowers? Have a Happy Wednesday folks it's #humpday! . A new post has arrived on the blog in which I strenuously attempt not to make any gardening resolutions for the new year. And fail utterly. So dark and grey outside today I'm not at all convinced the sun actually bothered to get out of bed this morning. But through the gloom as I wobbled about on a ladder tweaking the wisteria I spied a solitary pink #rose and well having bored you all with #pink #roses through most of 2017 I thought I'd see if I could do it again this year. Bring on the pink! #thepinkstagram #mystoryoflight #peninpractice #olympusuk #tostandandstare #winter #penepl7

This lovely creature is the Virginia or blue star fern though it's Latin name Phlebodium pseudoaureum is rather an enjoyable one to intone. It's fronds are a pale greyish blue green and present a wonderful contrast to the deeper verdant tones of the other ferns we've started assembling in the cosy but admittedly slightly dingy living room. I can't promise that this will be the last photo of this one. #sorrynotsorry . #houseplants #ferns #mystoryoflight #peninpractice #olympusuk…

Most impressed that @rakesprogress have convinced @ikeauk to make a rack specifically for their splendid back issues. I can't imagine what else you'd use it for. It's allowed me to make use of a bit of dead wall space so I'm particularly chuffed but then I'm the kind of person who gets excited about #storage solutions. Don't even get me started in the shelf I've put in above this with brackets to hang plants from... #mustgetoutmore . #kvissle #mystoryoflight #peninpractice #olympusuk…

Of all our #houseplants I'm afraid the schefflera comes in for the least love. I don't know why the poor umbrella plant should be given such short shrift perhaps it's because it's so reliable so ubiquitous and relatively unshowy. But this morning I discovered that in spite or maybe because of this apparent forth of affection it's put out a new leaf. How cute is that? Like it's waving at us. It might just have become my favourite member of our #houseplant family. . All the houseplant chat a…
