c. 1991: Tony Benn’s stealth tribute to Emily Wilding Davison, in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft (Houses of Parliament). Benn said in 2001: “I have put up several plaques—illegally, without permission; I screwed them up myself. One was in the broom cupboard to commemorate Emily Wilding Davison... If one walks around this place, one sees statues of people, not one of whom believed in democracy, votes for women or anything else..." Old votes for women poster Stock Image

At one time the three groups of adults who were legally excluded from voting in many western democracies were convicts, lunatics, and women--as this suffragette poster pointed out.

This is an anti-suffrage post card showing that many men believe that women belong in their houses and not out in the real world. Women fought hard to gain rights during this time period and suffered through much pain of having very few rights. In this photo this women is dressed and holding a flag showing she has been fighting for women's rights, while the boy is telling her that "A women's place is in her home" Thomas St. Clair Vintage Postcards
