A view from a war Transport report into street layouts. A view of one of the many 'back to back' housing streets typified by Coronation St and that would, often quite rightly, be condemned as slums and cleared in the post-war period. Bad as they often were some of the housing that replaced these streets hasn't weathered well - and has now been, in turn, demolished. Some of these terraces that were 'renovated' have at times kept some sense of community - but we forget how basic these houses…

A view of Manchester’s famous Oxford Road in the aftermath of a bombing raid during World War 2. A bomb appears to have destroyed several buildings very close to the centre of Manchester University. Though the image is undated it was probably taken during late December 1940. This period is remembered as the Christmas Blitz and as the event that truly brought the reality of war home to Mancunians. Piccadilly Gardens, considered by many to be at the very heart Manchester, is bounded by air raid shelters in this image from the Second World War. The city was heavily bombed in the Christmas Blitz of 1940 and continued to be an enemy target for some time. As Piccadilly Gardens is a major transport interchange and one of the city’s busiest public places, large numbers of shelters were erected for public use.
