·Someday I would like to make a garden with the most bizarre and interesting looking plants, things that look like they used to have dinosaurs stepping on them.

shredded umbrella plant [Syneilesis aconitifolia]. zone 4-8. 1.5-3 ft. tall & wide. Part shade to full shade. Best in sun dappled woodland conditions. Pinkish white flowers in June-July. (in the Aster family.) 10" size mature leaves, 18-24" tall. Herbaceous perennial. Some drought tolerance once established.
Shredded umbrella plant emerges in early spring as the white wooly leaves push through the ground like mayapples...or more appropriately, like shredded umbrellas after a hurricane. The exquisite foliage flattens out atop 18" stems by mid-spring. Expect a decent-sized colony as the rhizomes slowly spread (2' wide in 5-7 years). Flowers...forget the insignificant flowers...and enjoy the luscious foliage!
