We’ve won some funding from the Centre for Sustainable Energy to run open homes events this spring to complement the Green Build Festival that we run every autumn. The new series will focus on housing and is part of the national Green Open Homes Network. Between March and May we’ll will be hosting six open homes events on a weekend day, one in each local authority area within the county.
This energy efficient timber frame home, built in 2005 by Eden Frame has high levels of insulation to walls, floors and roof, heat exchange system for heat recovery from air extract, photovoltaic solar electricity, solar thermal panels for hot water and wood Burning Stove with back boiler. As a result the house requires no central heating!

April 5th: Open House at Brampton Mill - Brampton Beck runs through the property and a weir in the beck feeds the mill race that provides water to the mill. The restored mill now provides hydro-electricity from a newly built external mid-breastshot waterwheel which powers a 3.6 kW grid-connected generator. The electricity is fed to the grid and receives the feed-in tariff. The mill normally provides more than enough hydroelectricity to supply all the energy needs of the house.

Brampton Mill, Cumbria: Open Home April 5th - as well as the renewable energy systems there is a large organic vegetable garden, hens and a wagon in the orchard, built by the owners from recycled timber on a WWI lorry chassis, which offers an eco-holiday experience.
Whinfell View - Appleby area - This house will have traditional stone cladding and a slate roof with modern elements such as cedar cladding and Tata Steel Urbancoat roofing. It will also be on a biomass district heating system to be installed by Thermatech Ltd. The system will be located in an adjacent shed and fed by locally sourced wood chips supplied by Skogs Logs. The system will supply the 3 new houses plus four existing houses on the neighbouring farm.
Appleby area April 5th - visit to Whinfell View a timber frame house under construction by Western Construction Cumbria Ltd - 1 of 3 highly efficient new builds on the same site. The timber frame is by Eden Frame and will be fully insulated with Thermafleece sheep’s wool insulation. Opportunity to see inside the walls of a timber frame house and see elements which will be hidden from view once the house is complete.
Appleby Area: April 5th come and view a biomass boiler at a Victorian house. Complete refurbishment & extension of a ‘Victorian Gentleman’s Residence’. Addressing the issues of updating insulation, heating & 21st century facilities in an 1856 property. Installation of a 45kW Windhager biomass automatic pellet feed heating system by Greenfields of Penrith part of the CAfS Green Open Homes initiative
Appleby area - April 5th - visit a hydro-electric system at a 17th century listed watermill providing hydro-electricity to supply all the energy needs of the house, including heating, although this is also supplemented by solar panels covering the barn roof. The whole property is run on an ethos of sustainability.
