I was in Berlin recently and came upon the delightful Café Sibylle in Karl-Marx-Allee in Friedrichshain in the east of the city. The café feels as though it’s come straight from the ‘cold war’ era, complete with original furnishings and a real feeling of ‘old Berlin’. The café nestles at the base of a massive apartment complex which is an example of the intensive rebuilding of Berlin which was necessary after the destruction caused by Allied bombers towards the end of World War II.

An unmissable foodie spot is Woodstockholm in trendy Sodermalm. Friends Martin Stensö, Johan Edvardsson and Jon Åström Gröndahl began Woodstockholm as a small design outfit in 2011 and five years on it has grown into a celebrated design studio and restaurant.

The Issey Miyake team has been using a special folding and pleating technique on the brand’s clothing since the 1980s and adopted this for the cushions and napkins which reference ‘Spring blooming’. This dedication to craft and innovation is what initially brought the two brands together and the collection highlights their increasingly similar aesthetic.

The resulting range of work focusses on ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ items , from pleat cushions in jade green to glassware inspired by the palette of the cherry blossom tree.

Design platform Underverk collaborated with Dutch experience designer Pomme van Hoof to present KIOSK, a one-week programme showcasing different projects every day of the week by artists and designers who work with so called “intangibles”. The intention of KIOSK was to encourage visitors to experience design through activity and interaction.

Stockholm is steadily becoming a must-see event in the design calendar with a stellar satellite programme spread across the city. A thoroughly exhausting three days were spent roaming and feasting upon Nordic design. A list of each designer that we enjoyed would be too vast so we’ve chosen a specific selection of our favourites to share.

The projects all told different stories, and played with the perception of our five senses. We experienced Wednesday’s Present-Futures: Future Fortunes’ Planning for Change, where the KIOSK was turned into a fortune cookie making workshop that encourages you to ask yourself what fortune you wish to see in your future, by making your own cookie.
