Jack and the Beanstalk
This week we've been reading this Jack and the Beanstalk story by Nick Sharatt. It's a lift-the-flap book which the children always love. It also came with an accompanying cd so we can play the story again during rest time. This version of the fairytale classic differs a bit than the usual story. For a start the golden goose is a hen and the giant isn't so much into "I'll grind your bones to make my bread." My son had been doing a fairy tale focus at his school this term and that's all I…
Jack and the Beanstalk Activity: Build a Castle in the Clouds
Evan loves Jack and the Beanstalk so I thought it would be fun to build a castle in the clouds like the story. This STEM and sensory activity was the perfect extension for the book.

Jack and the Beanstalk – Math Ideas
This week we began the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. Today I thought I would share a few of the math activities we have been doing. They are obvious ideas but perhaps new in the application in this story! I wanted to take the concepts of 'enormous' and 'giant' and bring them to life with math. The Giant's Hand and Estimation I had a super large hand photocopied on paper that we estimated how many beans would fit in the palm of the 'giant's' hand. Guesses ranged from 4 to 1000. We counted…

Jack and the Beanstalk mathematics and craft activity: ask students to count out magic beans, leaves, and clouds. S1 Maths and Art
When I do one of my fairy tale units with my students, I tell them the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk" and use fun props. My magic beanstalk that grows to the ceiling is my favorite prop! This prop idea came from another preschool teacher that's a genius, and whom I absolutely adore. I wonder if she knows my students have been loving and adoring her beanstalk prop for years now? You'll need everything mentioned in the photo here, plus some scissors, a pencil, a marker, and a sewing needle…
Jack and the Beanstalk Play Dough!
As part of our Jack and the Beanstalk Growing topic, I made a batch of play dough following my usual recipe (see at the bottom of the post) then coloured half brown and half green. I set it out with two little terracotta pots, some green craft sticks and green pipe cleaners, a bowl of dried french beans and some little garden tools we had from another set. These are some of the things the girls did with it.... Recipe: 2 cups flour 1 cup salt 2 tsp cream of tarter 2 cups water 2 tbsp oil Mix…
