Castles aren't just reserved for royalty on their wedding day. These celebs did it A-list all the way.
September 12, 2008: The Spanish tennis star's second marriage to Jose Santancana was a private affair at Castillo de Peralada in Girona, with just 100 guests to celebrate the union during the ceremony in the castle's library, but around 300 guests attended the reception, also hosted at the castle.
August 27, 2011: One of the wealthiest heiresses on the planet, Petra Ecclestone (her billionaire dad, Bernie, runs F1) ensured no expense was spared when she wed James Stunt at Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano, Italy. A custom, strapless Vera Wang gown, $40,000 fireworks display, and three days of celebration led to a final bill of 12mn British pounds. Adding to expenses, both Eric Clapton and the Black Eyed Peas performed at the ceremony, where Petra's older sister, Tamara, was maid of honour.
April 14, 2009: ESPN reporter Shannon Spake married Jerry McSorley at Adare Manor, a gothic 19th Century castle south of Limerick, Ireland, in front of 75 friends and family. He proposed on a Venetian gondola, and the couple honoured Irish heritage with their destination castle wedding ceremony, complete with a bagpiper procession from the local church to the manor for the reception. Guests imbibed on Guinness, potato and leek soup, Irish beef and sea bass, and orange creme brulee for dessert.
Jan. 5, 2002: He has since called their union 'shambolic,' but pop stars Brian McFadden and Kerry Katona were married in front of family, friends, and Hello! at Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathfeigh, Ireland, with a reception at Slane Castle outside his native Dublin. (He proposed to her outside Doe Castle in Donegal, too - same spot his grandparents got engaged years earlier.) The "big, Irish family wedding" went late, despite the couple's 4-month-old daughter Molly turning in early.
Sept. 2, 2011: Irish pop star Brian McFadden wed model/DJ Vogue Williams in an intimate castle setting in Tuscany. The couple reportedly wed in a Dublin civil ceremony before flying in to the medieval Castello di Vincigliata near Florence - a 'halfway point' for Irish and Aussie friends and fam. Williams wore a satin gown by Aussie label J'Aton Couture, and his tween daughters with Kerry Katona, Molly and Lilly, were flower girls. Guests were treated to a fireworks display to close out the day.
June 26, 2010: Mena Suvari's second marriage was traditional all the way (she eloped the 1st time). She married show promoter Simone Sestito in an 8th Century Catholic church in Vatican City, and treated guests to a reception at Odescalchi Castle in nearby Bracciano, Italy. She wore an alice+olivia gown. Guests (small, mostly family) were served risotto, raviolini, and veal carre, and the newlyweds, who divorced a year later, shared their first dance to an original song by the Gipsy Kings.
October 18, 2011: Though they've kept photos and the exact location under wraps, actors Danny Masterson and Bijou Phillips announced they'd wed at a private castle in Tipperary, Ireland (a nod to his roots), after their plans for a ceremony in Iceland fell through after the 2011 volcanic eruption. She wore custom Zac Posen, he wore a tux by Albert Hammond Jr for Confederacy for the Scientology ceremony, in front of friends like Ethan Suplee, Ben Foster, and his actor brother Chris, was best man.
September 9, 2004: The former boybander wed girlfriend Kelly Baldwin at Oheka Castle on Long Island, years before he attended Kevin Jonas' nuptuals there. The couple's 3-year-old daughter Briahna was flower girl. Kelly wore a strapless Ulla-Maija gown, recreated, along with his tux, in the form of two wedding cakes at the indoor-carnival themed reception. Smashmouth performed, and guests (Justin Timberlake and Nia Vardalos among them) signed guitars from Joey's collection in lieu of a guestbook.
December 19, 2009: Attended by his brothers, the oldest Jonas, Kevin (in a Brooks Brothers tux) wed girlfriend Danielle Deleasa (in chantilly lace Vera Wang) in front of 400 guests at Oheka Castle in Huntington, on Long Island in New York. Guests including Demi Lovato, Jordan Sparks, and Joey Fatone celebrated with a seven-tier chocolate mousse and pistachio wedding cake adorned with Swarovski crystals, and a casino-themed cocktail hour featured Rat Pack impersonators.
Indian socialite Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel magnate Lakshmi, married investment banker Amit Bhatia in front of 1,000 guests in a five-day ceremony estimated to have cost $78 MILLION, renting out Chateau de Vaux le Vicomte in Maincy, France outside Paris. Kylie Minogue performed at a reception where guests were served over 100 dishes, while it's said the wine alone cost $1.5 million.
April 29, 2011: Though Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge were married at Westminster Abbey, it would be remiss not to include them for the fact their (multiple) receptions all took place inside the Queen's official residence, Buckingham Palace. The official wedding portraits were taken there, too. While Kate changed into a second Sarah Burton for McQueen for dining, dancing, and recieving on her wedding day, guests partied well into Saturday to celebrate the wedding of the year.
June 12, 2008: The England striker spared no expense in his rumoured $15 million wedding to his childhood sweetheart. The couple married at 17th Century Villa Durazzo near Portofino, with the bride decked out in a $4m custom Marchesa gown. Four days of parties celebrated the couple's union and made Coleen one of the Premier League's best WAGs. But despite the heavy price tag, the Man U star kept down-to-earth sensibilities intact by serving guests pizza at the reception.
June 16, 2007: Rod Stewart married his third blonde bride at Villa Durazzo in Santa Margherita, Italy. Save for the religious ceremony at a medieval abbey at La Cervara near Portofino, the civil service and reception were held at the 17th Century castle after a week of family celebrations by yacht along the Mediterreanean coast. Like many an A-list wedding, Rod and Penny's reception featured a decadent meal, dancing, and fireworks. Penny wore a dress by Spanish designer Manuel Mota.
December 31, 1997: Will and Jada sealed their A-list union in a New Year's Eve ceremony at the Cloisters Mansion, an American castle, in front of about 100 friends and family. Smith reportedly asked the pastor, "Can I kiss her now?" toward the end of the ceremony held in the Cloisters Gallery, where 3-months-pregnant Jada wore a velvet gown by Badgley Mischka. Guests like Tisha Campbell and Jasmine Guy dined on poached salmon and smoked turkey, and Smith performed at the reception with son Trey.
June 11, 2002: The former Beatle wed second wife, Heather Mills, at 17th Century Castle Leslie in Glaslough, Ireland. 300 guests (Ringo Starr, Twiggy, and Steve Buscemi among them) witnessed the wedding at 17th Century St. Salvator's Church on the castle grounds (bells pealed for 20 minutes to celebrate the first kiss), and partook in a vegetarian reception with 4-tier chocolate wedding cake, entertainment, and Indian-themed entertainment. Caroline Eavis and Annie Brown designed Mills' dress.
March 7, 2007: Not to be outdone by the English castle that housed wedding #1, the couple's second, traditional Indian ceremony, took place at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Both dressed in traditional garb, Hurley's decadent sari was designed by Tarun Tahilani. The ceremony featured belly dancers as well as dancing white horses. The two ceremonies are said to have cost Nayar roughly $2 million.
March 3, 2007: For the British portion of their transcontinental nuptuals, Elizabeth Hurley wed Indian businessman Arun Nayar in a civil ceremony at 15th Century Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe, England. Her son Damian played ring bearer, then partied with his mother at a star-studded religious ceremony and reception (guests included Elton John, who also performed for the couple, and Kate Moss) at the castle the next night. The bride wore Versace.
August 4, 2001: The 007 actor married Smith after a long courtship and engagement (they already had 2 sons), in his native Ireland. They married in a Catholic ceremony at 13th Century Balintubber Abbey in County Mayo, the groom in Gianni Campagna tails and the bride in Richard Tyler. A reception at the 17th Century Ashford Castle Hotel in Cong followed, where the couple danced to Springsteen, guests dined on lobster, a 6-tier wedding cake, and were treated to a fireworks display.
July 7, 2007: Tradition was on order for Eva's (in Angel Sanchez) wedding to Tony in his native France. A civil ceremony in one of Paris' city halls, religious ceremony at the 7th Century Saint Germain l'Auxerrois Church, and reception at 17th Century Chateau Vaux le Vicomte kept guests including Ryan Seacrest, the ladies of Desperate Housewives, and NBA stars entertained. "Passionate" red food like lobster and gazpacho were served, and the night topped by a fireworks display over the castle.
July 4, 1999: David and Victoria Beckham were already big stars when they wed at 16th Century Luttrellstown Castle near Dublin. Victoria wore Vera Wang, Becks wore ivory and cream for the ceremony, but changed into purple for the reception after the couple's infant son Brooklyn threw up on him. Footballer Gary Neville served as best man, and all four Spice Girls were in attendance. An 18pc. orchestra entertained a black-and-white reception, and the couple donated their 5-tier cake to charity.
December 12, 2001: One couple who did manage to keep their Skibo Castle nuptuals private were actress Ashley Judd and race car driver Scottish Dario Franchitti. Details of the top-secret ceremony are scarce, though Edward Norton, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas were among the guests, who shared 100 bottles of champagne to toast the kilted groom and bride dressed in Armani.
December 22, 2000: For almost a decade, Madge and Ritchie kept their wedding photos secret, until a mag scooped the pics in '09 (and paid a handsome settlement to the Material Girl for breach of privacy), but now we've all seen the shots from Skibo Castle, Dornoch, in the Scottish Highlands, with guests Gwyneth P., Sting and Trudie Styler, and Stella McCartney, who designed the dress. The secret ceremony and grand reception doubled as a christening for the couple's four-month-old son, Rocco.
Nov. 18, 2006: Before the divorce of the year came the wedding of '06 (and Scientology wedding of the decade), at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. A decadent reception followed in Odescalchi's Hall of Caesars for 150, including the Beckhams, Will & Jada, and Brooke Shields. Both the bride and groom wore Armani, while 7-month-old daughter Suri played 'flower baby.'
