Musical chairs writing. When the music stops you pick up writing where the last person left off. Time intervals baed on grade level...

PP said, "musical chairs reading. Play music and when the music stops students stop, sit down and start reading! Lots of fun and something different to develop reading interests." Perhaps you could also put letters of alphabet on chairs &/or sight words.

Where's the bear? Sight word practice

Where's the Bear? I wanted to post a pick of another favorite sight word game of my cuties. It's called Where's the Bear. I labeled Dixie cups with sight words. Then I turn them over onto a tray and hide a bear underneath one cup.

Have the students make their writing "more colorful" by using paint strips. Write a boring adjective at the bottom of the paint strip on the most boring color. Give each student a paint strip and they can use a thesaurus or a word wall to think of "more colorful" words for their strip. Put the best word on the brightest part of the strip. Hang all of their strips on the door and they can use those words to help "make their writing colorful!"

Love this idea from Delights and Designs… You could easily extend this for more able pupils to contain more word types. Children are encouraged to come up and pick a word from the teacher. They then place the stick in the correct pot. To further extend, they could then pick a word from each cup and create a sentence. Perfect for assessment!
