Nella Larsen is widely regarded as the premier novelist of the Harlem Renaissance and a pioneer analyst of biracial identity. Her first novel, Quicksand (1928), is a largely autobiographical work concerning the struggle of Helga Crane, the mixed-race protagonist, to gain a sense of belonging in a highly racialized society. In 1923, Larsen became the first professionally-trained Black librarian and then in 1930 became the first Black woman to be awarded a Guggenheim fellowship.
Louis-Ernest Barrias's most celebrated work, an homage to advances made in scientific exploration, first appeared in marble at the Paris Salon of 1893 and was acquired by the faculty at L'École de Médecine in Bordeaux. The present variation was commissioned two years later for the Escalier d'Honneur at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers. It was exhibited at the Salon in 1899 and the Paris Exposition universelle in 1900 and became the most famous work form the sculptor's repertoire.
Witness an extraordinary group of old master drawings assembled by the American fashion designer Herbert Kasper. Remarkable for the quality of each drawing, the collection includes works by artists active in Italy and Northern Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among the 35 drawings in the sale are exceptional sheets by some of the most important Mannerist artists such as Parmigianino, Giulio Romano, Paolo Veronese, Giorgio Vasari, Hendrick Goltzius and Peter Paul Rubens among others.
Raised by a single mother in difficult financial circumstances at the end of the 19th century, Laura Knight was determined to make a name for herself as a female painter in the male-dominated art world of the early 20th century. Though Knight never had children of her own, it is clear she had an affinity for them. Rather than depicting an 'adult' viewpoint from above, this picture has the eye lines of the sitter and the viewer aligned and on the same level.
English lawyer, statesman, and author Sir Thomas More invented the word utopia for his famous work reflecting Renaissance philosophical ideals. This edition, published by his friend Johannes Froben, features a woodcut map of More's imaginary perfect city as well as a new alphabet for the 'Utopian language', for which Froben had a special set of type made.
Julius LeBlanc Stewart was an artistic rarity. Like another American expatriate master, John Singer Sargent, Stewart barely knew his native country. In Paris, his depictions of the most renowned celebrities are epitomized by 'The Hunt Supper.' The exact identities of most of the participants in this work are not known, Stewart could not resist including himself among the glitterati in such an elegant interior, although he places himself in the rear center of the group.
Artist Peder Severin Krøyer found a muse in his wife, Marie Triepeke, however as his portraits of her enraptured his audience more and more, the basis of their marriage gradually crumbled. The couple is shown on an evening beach walk where the sea and the sky dissolve into a continuous medium. Although the scene appears idyllic, beneath the surface there is a hint of melancholy. Krøyer is holding Marie by the arm, but there is something fragile about his figure, and she is in her own world.
The picture began life as a smaller canvas and as a working study of H.R.H. The Princess Royal, the only daughter of George V, and aunt to Queen Elizabeth II. His widow Violet, Lady Munnings claimed that she had been the model for the huntswoman, and lamented that she could not afford to buy the picture back for the collection at Castle House. The painting is a complex blend of sitters and subjects: a portrait; a hunting scene; a conversation piece; and a satire.
