Life Lately

Autumn has been very mild so far this year; we have enjoyed had some beautiful walks in the country. At home, we have come to the end of our weather and seasons project. The children have learned, through hands on activities, about day and night and shadows and have drawn what they have found out in their books. They have written some sentences on sun and rain and have discovered some of the different cloud formations. We did two mini unit studies on the books A New Coat for Anna (seasons…

The Glorious Flight: A Unit Study

A morning of paper airplanes plus a small herd of eager LITTLES equals a few hours of fantastical adventure...and maybe an accidental poke in the eye or two with the aforementioned airplanes, but we won't get into that! For our final homeschool co-op book club meeting of the year, the kids and I flew all the way to France and back, through the pages of Alice Provensen's award winning classic, The Glorious Flight. This simple tale recounts the historic achievements of Frenchman and aviator…

Bees, Hexagons, and a Honeycomb

Cardboard rolls make an awesome art supply. You can do SO much with them, including making a honeycomb. Here’s how we did it. Oh, and just because I like to be sneaky (which you probably deduced from the name of this blog), I didn’t tell my son what we were making; the suspense nearly killed him [hee hee]. Make marks to divide two paper towel rolls in thirds and using a pencil and ruler, draw two straight lines down the length of each roll. Then measure down the rolls every 2 centimeters…

Mirette and Bellini - In this Caldecott Medal-winning story, a young girl convinces a retired high-wire artist to teach her his trade — and in turn teaches him to overcome his own fear. Mirette on the High Wire {FI♥AR}

Mirette on the High Wire, set in France, is a story about a young girl named Mirette who learns to walk on the high wire and helps Bellini, a retired high wire walker, overcome his fear. We learned about circus agents, circus acts, balance, set up a high-wire in our back yard (similar to the Slackline), did some experiments with copper, made some circus food (corn dogs and funnel cakes) and even had our own circus! This was a very fun row, and we rowed it in one week. I also included the…

This was our first time reading Mailing May , so I did the lesson from the manual on the cover illustration.

Mailing May {FI♥AR}

This was our first time reading Mailing May, so I did the lesson from the manual on the cover illustration. Eliana guessed that May was going on a trip, but never guessed that she was being mailed to get there! Yes, Mailing May, based on a true story, is about a little girl, who in 1914, is mailed to her grandmother in Lewiston, Idaho for 53 cents in stamps! We had fun with this one! We started out with an art lesson on how to braid that turned into making a braided rug, learned about…

The Bee Tree {FI♥AR} - using potato stamp in shape of hexagon to make honeycomb

The Bee Tree {FI♥AR}

The Bee Tree "When Mary Ellen gets bored with her reading, Grandpa knows a hunt for a bee tree is just what she needs. Half the town joins the exciting chase, but it's not until everyone returns home that Mary Ellen makes a discovery of her own: Sometimes, even the sweetest of things must be worked for." We began our adventure with a field trip to Tongue River Honey {local, family owned, and operated} the week they were in full honey production in September. It was neat to see how honey is…

Grand Canyon, Deserts & Roxaboxen {FI♥AR}

We made a detour through the state of Arizona on our way home from California, so I brought along Roxaboxen to row! We drove through the southern tip of the Mohave Desert, took a trip to the Grand Canyon, and drove through the Painted Desert. We camped for two nights at the Grand Canyon with my husband's aunt and uncle and grandma. I did not expect it to be snowing when we arrived. It was gorgeous, but VERY cold and windy! We warmed up in the museums along the 25 mile route we drove along…
