Located in the small Alpine village of Maranza with views of the Dolomites, the hotel is segmented into four staggered volumes, unified by blackened larch cladding and large curved cut-outs in their facades.

Dutchess County Studio is composed of three rectangular volumes arranged in a pinwheel to overlap one another. Textured black brickwork walls are slanted at the top to meet with triangular clerestory windows.

Fjord Boat House perches on a concrete plinth beside the water and is largely imperceptible from above, thanks to its grass-topped roof. The rest of its exterior is clad with blackened beams of timber, but inside this gives way to a much warmer material palette.

Externally, changes to the dwelling are visible where some existing windows have been relocated to suit the new interior configuration. The street-facing facade of the ground floor has also been updated with metal panels, wooden louvres and dark wood cladding that has been treated using the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban.

New York practice Desai Chia Architecture has wrapped a house in Connecticut situated on top of a rocky ledge with charred cedar and large windows that overlook the hilly landscape.

A matte-black rendering called Corev Mooth covers the walls of this residence, while window frames and shutters are made from a tropical tzalam wood coated in reddish sealer as a contrast. Called Las Golondrinas, the house is composed of three volumes topped by a large sloped roof to create a covered patio that opens onto a swimming pool that aligns with the tree canopy.

Cedar charred black using the Japanese method of yakisugi and stone from a quarry in nearby Acatlán are used to blend this house "as a shadow in the green surroundings". Among the key features of the property is a huge cantilevered volume fronted by a large window that offers views from the living room to a nearby lake.

The Mexico City firm covered the house in a matte-black rendering called Corev Mooth so it would not upstage its lush surroundings at the top of its sloped plot.

Architecture firm PPAA has designed a black house atop a sloped site in Mexico's Valle de Bravo region with a swimming pool that meets the tree canopy.

Black paint has been applied across the front and rear elevations, and all of the windows have been refitted with black window frames. A black-frame balustrade has also been set in front of the home's first-floor balcony.

On the residence's all black front, an attached garage unit is fronted with glazed doors and a grouping of clerestory windows run along the top of the one-and-half-storey foyer.
