Almost exactly 100 years ago, the campaign for women's right to vote was in full swing. Most people probably know a little about the sufragettes, as activists were called, and their efforts to achieve equality through chaining themselves to railings and general public disorder. London Hippodrome, 1930

The Hippodrome, on the corner of Leicester Square and Charing Cross Road, is one of London's most famous landmarks. This picture, part of the Museum of London's collection, was taken in 1930 when "Sons O'Guns" opened. The musical ran for 211 performances.

Moving a little further down Charing Cross Road to Manette Street on the west side, the photographer, who is standing outside the main Foyles bookshop building, points his camera north to show another Foyles shop, vacated by them in the 1980's and now a remaindered book store. Opened in 1927 and unrecognizable after conversion from a Crosse and Blackwell jam and pickle factory, the late lamented Astoria was at various times in its life a theatre, a cinema and a venue for live bands until it's demolition in 2008.
