My new book is about a house and the people who live in it, and that meant I could legitimately spend hours looking at anthropologie.com homeware & dream houses on zoopla....

Harriet Evans
This house is designed by Edwin Lutyens and is called Homewood. It's basically what I had in mind for Winterfold, the house in A Place for Us. i love Lutyens houses, arts and crafts, all of that. I had this photo on my desk while i was writing it. (I've never been there, maybe it's next to a main road by the dump.)

Blackwell, in Cumbria, is a beautiful gorgeous house in the Arts and Crafts tradition. I visited it and loved the woodwork, the attention to detail, the carvings… it's so delicate and yet warm and welcoming too and that's what I wanted the house to feel like.

Blackwell - The Arts & Crafts house - Bowness-on-Windermere

Visit Blackwell, fall in love with this historic house, its original Arts & Crafts features and stunning lake views. Pop to the Tea Room for home-baked treats, find exclusive gifts in the Craft Shop and see website for activities available for families and adults at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House in Bowness-on-Windermere.

I know it might look crazy, but it was really important that I understood the layout of the house so I could believe they were all there! So I bought a blank pop-up book from a children's art shop and filled it full of pictures of houses and did a floor plan.(Also proof that writers will use ANY excuse to get out of doing any actual writing)

All four beautiful covers of the e-book serialization of A Place for Us. It's being released in 4 parts, one part a month starting from 31st August. Very exciting! I love the different colours.

This is the house used in the film of Howards End. I absolutely loved this house, I had a friend who lived nearby and drove past it often, looking in in a stalkerish fash. It's so unpretentious and simple and absolutely beautiful too.

The Ivy-Covered Country House from "Howards End" Is For Sale

Remember the ivy-covered country house featured in the Merchant-Ivory movie "Howards End"? It's on the market in Oxfordshire, England. Take a look!

Imagine this door with a big owl door knocker and wisteria frothing around it… that's how I saw the front door of Winterfold.

I always had Carnation Lily Lily Rose in mind when writing the book. it is one of my favourite paintings (by John Singer Sargent). He painted it over a period of several months in the evening dusk each night just to capture that curious quality of the light. I love the girls' absorption of what they're doing and the Chinese lanterns, and the sense of an English garden around them. It doesn't feature in the book, just was important for the feeling overall.

Another view of the house I thought lots about, Homewood. I love this view of the garden and the wooden gables of the house.
