Romanticism, first defined as an aesthetic in literary criticism around 1800, gained momentum as an artistic movement in France and Britain in the early decades of the nineteenth century and flourished until mid-century. With its emphasis on the imagination and emotion, Romanticism emerged as a response to the disillusionment with the Enlightenment values of reason and order in the aftermath of the French Revolution of 1789

Fishermen at Sea (1796) JMW Turner. Turner has created a very powerful painting of a storm. The contrast between the darkness around the ship and the light from the moon has given it a sense of mystery and also draws the eye towards the boat which is struggling against the wild waves and the serene blues of the waters. This emphasizes natures overwhelming power against mankind. This painting was created with oil paint which has formed a delicate but powerful image.
