One of Lynn Setterington's kantha quilts. I love this technique, which I think originated in India. You stitch several layers of thin cotton fabric together with running stitch in different colours of threads, which forms the motifs. Kantha

A visit in 1988 to the Woven Air Exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London which showcased hand embroidered Kantha quilts from Bangladesh and Bengal brought about a change in Setterington's work and a dialogue with contemporary quiltmaking that has continued ever since. Her work is in major collections from the V&A Museum to Whitworth Art Gallery, Denver Art Museum and Crafts Council Collection

She uses a technique called Kantha, which originates from Bengal. I was fortunate in the summer to spend a month with a Textiles Vocational Training Center in Calcutta Bengal, where this technique was beautifully mastered.
