Aliens - 1986.  Sequel to 1979's Alien.  Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). the sole survivor of the first mission, wakes from hyper sleep to learn that the planet has been colonized by miners and their families, but contact has been lost. I think she was the first tough, take charge and rescue herself female protagonist in a scifi/horror movie.  Maybe any movie genre to that point?
