William "Billy" Mitchell (December 29, 1879 – February 19, 1936) was a United States Army general who is regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force

Billy Mitchell was probably the best-known American in Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the World War I Victory Medal with eight campaign clasps, and several foreign decorations.

Helm, Mitchell and Billy Mitchell left for Kahoolawe on March 5 to look for two friends who had been protesting the bombing of the island. Unable to find their friends, the three men attempted to paddle back to Maui and encountered rough seas. Billy Mitchell returned to Kahoolawe to seek help, but Helm and Kimo Mitchell disappeared.
