Cirrostratus clouds | UCAR Center for Science Education

CIRROSTRATUS CLOUDS belong to the High Cloud group. They are sheetlike thin clouds that usually cover the entire sky.

Cirrostratus clouds are thin, generally uniform clouds, composed of ice-crystals. They are difficult to detect and if capable of forming halos the cloud takes the form of thin cirrostratus nebulosus. Its presence indicates a large amount of moisture in the upper atmosphere. Cirrostratus clouds sometimes signal the beginning of a warm front if they form after cirrus and spread from one area across the sky and thus may be signs that precipitation might follow in the next 12 to 24 hours.

The "halo cloud" was just an optical illusion caused by sunlight hitting a cloud at just the right angle. The cloud's round shape is likely what is known as a hole-punch cloud. These clouds occur within cirrostratus clouds, which are often composed of ice crystals and drops of water that are below freezing temperature but still in liquid form. When cirrostratus clouds are disturbed by planes or strong winds, the droplets can freeze instantly or evaporate, the latter of which will form the…

What is this strange halo cloud in the sky over Nicaragua? A simple halo cloud illuminated from above? Looks like an UFO!

a "fire rainbow" - ice-halo formed by plate-shaped ice crystals in high level cirrus clouds

a rare cloud phenomenon also called a circumhorizontal arc -- an ice halo formed by hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals in high level cirrus clouds

Friend's dad got a call from his buddy to go check the sky outside - Imgur. Halos are produced by the ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds. The crystals behave like prisms and mirrors, refracting and reflecting sunlight between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions. These amateur sky-watchers were lucky enough to spot some outside their home in Finland, and in doing so, captured one of the most beautiful images this year

A sun dog, or parhelion, is an exceedingly bright spot on a solar halo. According to wikipedia a sundog “is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sun dogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.

Cirrostratus clouds form more of a widespread, veil-like layer (similar to what stratus clouds do in low levels).  When sunlight or moonlight passes through the hexagonal-shaped ice crystals of cirrostratus clouds, the light is dispersed or refracted (similar to light passing through a prism) in such a way that a familiar ring or halo may form. As a warm front approaches, cirrus clouds tend to thicken into cirrostratus, which may, in turn, thicken and lower into altostratus, stratus, and…

There must be a new Pope! Heavenly pictures show the sun ringed by a HALO

Known as a 'sundog', a solar halo is a distant cousin of a rainbow caused by sunlight shining through a thin layer of cloud called Cirrostratus, which is made up of millions of tiny ice crystals.
