Donald Pleasence was initially a conscientious objector, but later changed his stance and was commissioned into the Royal Air Force, serving with 166 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command. His Avro Lancaster was shot down on 31 August 1944, during a raid on Agenville. He was taken prisoner and placed in a German prisoner-of-war camp, where he produced and acted in plays. -- He later played  Flight Lt. Colin Blythe in The Great Escape .

The Conscientious Objector prisoner barracks at Fort Douglas, Utah, 1919-Mennonites. -   130 Mennonites who refused the draft were court-martialed and sentenced to 10-30 years at Leavenworth.  Four of them were placed in solitary confinement at Alcatraz, were denied adequate food and drink, and required to stand all day with their arms chained to bars above their heads.  Forced to sleep on cold, damp stone floors, two of them died from pneumonia.
