These images, consisting of imitations of the forms humans could see, evolved into an ideographic style of writing; one symbol or glyph corresponding to each spoken word in the language. Ideographic writing followed a different evolution for the cultures of the Sumerians, Chinese, Aztecs, Mayans, and of course, the Egyptians.
