Florence Nightingale, OM, RRC was a celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She came to prominence while serving as a nurse during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers.
This drawing portrays Florence Nightingale in a hospital ward. While she worked in various hospitals during the Crimean War, she often carried a lamp as she visited many of the patients each night. Florence became known as the "Lady with the Lamp.
The building in which the Florence Nightingale Museum is now located was built by the Selim III in Üsküdar as a military barracks. The site was allocated to the English army during the Crimean War and wounded soldiers were treated here.
