During my career as a park ranger with North Carolina state parks I often received crazy reports of unusual and exotic animals in or near the park. There have been accounts of mountain lions, wolves and even a kangaroo prowling around.

This is a Sherman’s fox squirrel. Fox squirrels are bigger than your average squirrel and have an amazing range of colours from tawny to silver to black. Some have black masks or are entirely black.

The silver fox is a melanistic form of red fox. Melanism is when the animal's coloring is much darker than normal. Interestingly, fox squirrels, who have brownish body fur and reddish tummy fur also have a melanistic form that resembles this. I had a "black" fox squirrel that I hand raised. He lived to be 12 years old, a full ten years longer than he would have in the wild.

The Fox Squirrel, Sciurus Niger, is the largest species of tree squirrel native to N. America. They're certainly HUGE where I grew up in Hart Co. Kentucky. Nothing like I see in Western Washington or Denver Colorado. I met one on the ground as big as my 11lb tomcat, unusually big even for a Fox squirrel. I stepped one foot forward as a little challenge. It did the same to me... I backed off=) #johnjliam
