Fox squirrel populations in South Carolina are scattered throughout the Coastal Plain, occur less often in the Piedmont, and are rare to absent in the Blue Ridge.

The silver fox is a melanistic form of red fox. Melanism is when the animal's coloring is much darker than normal.  Interestingly, fox squirrels, who have brownish body fur and reddish tummy fur also have a melanistic form that resembles this.  I had a "black" fox squirrel that I hand raised.  He lived to be 12 years old, a full ten years longer than he would have in the wild.

This is a Sherman’s fox squirrel. Fox squirrels are bigger than your average squirrel and have an amazing range of colours from tawny to silver to black. Some have black masks or are entirely black.

I really love these little guys even though I know they are non-native ... they are great to watch and I give them apple cores to eat. They also like the squirrel mixture with corn and peanuts on the ground, and the "squirrel cakes" that I hang from the tree.
