George Washington being baptized by John Gano ~ one of my great-grandmothers on my father's side of the family tree was a Gano who arrived in New Amsterdam (now New York) by ship from Rochelle, France in the mid- to late-17th century, when just a small child. They were Huguenots, and spelled their name "Ganneau" or "Gerneaux" in France. Another Americanized spelling of it is something like "Gunnough"
