Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán (1913-1971) President of Guatemala  1951-54. A handful of U.S. corporations controlled Guatemala's primary electrical utilities, the only railroad, & the banana industry, which was Guatemala's chief agricultural export. Land reform was centerpiece of Arbenz's campaign - he delivered. In 18 months, 1,500,000 acres were distributed to about 100,000 families; owners of expropriated land were compensated. Some of this included the 85% of the unused United Fruit Company…

The Guatemalan Party of Labour (Partido Guatemalteco del Trabajo) was a communist party in Guatemala. It existed from 1949 to 1998. It gained prominence during the government of Col. Jacobo Arbenz. It was one of the main forces of opposition to the various regimes that followed Arbenz's overthrow and became a constituent of the URNG guerrilla coalition during the later phase of the country's Civil War.

After removing Arbenz from power, the US was still investigating and found interaction involving money from Moscow being given to the Guatemalan Party of Labour, a communist party.
