Mel's Drive-In. A legendary diner from 1947 in San Francisco. And it is still there. In October 1963, it was the center of a racial dispute not allowing african-americans to work at the front desk. Thousands protested, and more than 100 protesters were arrested. The picketing ended when Harold Dobbs, a San Francisco City Supervisor who had run for Mayor and lost, settled with the protesters and began to allow black workers "up front."
