Colors of the Innermost Planet: This image of Mercury was produced by using images from the color base map during MESSENGER's primary mission. These colors are not what Mercury would look like to the human eye, but rather the colors enhance the chemical, mineralogical, and physical differences between the rocks that make up Mercury's surface. Colors of the Innermost Planet, Mercury

This colorful view of Mercury was produced by using images from Messenger's color base map imaging campaign which enhance the chemical, mineralogical, and physical differences between the rocks that make up the planet's gray pock-marked moon-like surface

For the first time, the entire surface of planet Mercury has been mapped. Detailed observations of the innermost planet's surprising crust have been ongoing since the robotic MESSENGER spacecraft first passed Mercury in 2008 and began orbiting in 2011. Previously, much of the Mercury's surface was unknown as it is too far for Earth-bound telescopes to see clearly

On April this region of Mercury's surface will have a new crater! Traveling at kilometers per second (over miles per hour), the MESSENGER spacecraft will collide with Mercury's surface, creating a crater estimated to be 16 meters feet) in diameter.
