Norwich Castle is a medieval royal fortification in the city of Norwich, in the English county of Norfolk. It was founded in the aftermath of the Norman conquest of England when William the Conqueror (1066–1087) ordered its construction because he wished to have a fortified place in the important city of Norwich. It proved to be his only castle in East Anglia. It is one of the Norwich 12 heritage sites.

Norwich Castle was a developed and lavish structure, with complex internal divisions, which had been conceived from the start. The basement exterior was faced with dressed flint and that above with Caen stone.

Norwich Castle Keep “This final shot from November 1889 shows the excavations in the gutted castle keep, before its conversion into a museum. The blocked archway in the top right corner was opened up, and shows the kitchen area on the balcony in the museum today.”

The dark arch with 'ears' in the middle of the wall was once the King’s fireplace, and was one of the first castle hearths to be built into the wall rather than placed in the centre of the room.”

Norwich Castle Keep “The King’s Chapel area is shown here in the early 1890s before Norwich Castle re-opened as a museum, and the balcony floor isn’t quite finished. The brick archways on the left were put in during the centuries that the castle keep was used as a prison, and can still be seen today.”
