The as-yet undiscovered 'island of stability' is proposed to lie in the upper reaches of the nuclide chart, around proton number (Z) 114 and neutron number 184. This is an otherwise complex nuclear landscape: coloured squares indicate nuclides that have been synthesized in the laboratory through nuclear reactions such as those between targets of lead-208 or uranium-238 and beams of lighter nuclei (left and central ellipses, respectively).
