Antarctic ozone layer, healing

The Antarctic ozone hole, which typically reaches its annual peak area between mid-September and early October, formed more slowly this year but quickly expanded to cover a larger area of low ozone values than the past few years.

According to a United Nations report published Wednesday, the ozone layer -- which protects Earth's inhabitants from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays -- is slowly rebuilding itself.

International Space Station astronauts captured this photo of Earth's atmospheric layers on July revealing the troposphere (orange-red), stratosphere and above.

MIT Scientists Observe First Signs of Healing in the Antarctic Ozone Layer

Scientists have found the first 'fingerprints of healing' for the Antarctic ozone hole. The September ozone hole has shrunk by more than 4 million square kilometers since when ozone depletion was at its peak.

THE OZONE LAYER: As a result of the international treaty called the Montreal Protocol, banning of some of the substances responsible for ozone depletion, the ozone layer will return to 1980 levels between 2050 and 2070.

"Our atmosphere "contains an unexpectedly large amount of an ozone-depleting compound from an unknown source, decades after the compound was banned worldwide," reports a NASA study out this week.
