The open ocean, or pelagic zone, in area where you'll find many of the largest ocean species.

What Is the Pelagic Zone?

Siphonophore: This beautiful colonial organism drifted past Hercules' cameras, and we followed it for as long as we could keep track. They are made up of many smaller animals called zooids, and can be found floating around the pelagic zone in ocean basins around the world. One famous siphonophore species is the deadly Portugese Man O' War.

The Divisions of the Ocean The ocean can separate the shore, littoral zone, from the open, or pelagic zone, from the ocean.

Pollution affecting marine life within the Pelagic Zone consists primarily of plastic debris in both shallow and deep waters. "This work has been split into 5 segments that denote the main oceans, and the distribution and colours of the plastic debris describe the size and depth of each of the pelagic zones of these oceans." Benthic and Pelagic Zones

Understanding the Differences Between Benthic and Pelagic Zones

Benthic and pelagic zones refer to the different regions within a body of water. In this Buzzle article, we shall study the important aspects of both these regions, and make a comparison between their attributes.

THE STORY SO FAR...Once upon a time, something over a hundred million years ago, an awful lot of plankton lived and died and ended up on the muddy bottom of sea and lake beds mixed up with bits and pieces of vegetation. Sediment gradually built up over the plankton layer, heating it up and exerting such huge pressures that it eventually formed oil and natural gas.

The oceans are alive with amazing tiny creatures in the plankton. Many of these are larval stages of arthropods, echinoderms and molluscs. Alien inspiration anyone?

Sea angels are a funny name for a sea slug, but in this case it's right on point. They dwell in the pelagic zone, so in the middle layer of the ocean, and is an opisthobranch, meaning its gills are behind it and help propel it through water. These gastropods have relinquished their shells and grown a free-moving tail-like appendage, both of which assist it in autonomous motion.
