Hydrangea paniculata Little Lime ('Jane') (PBR) - It may be half the size of its sibling 'Limelight', but this fab new hydrangea still packs pretty good punch. It has strong stems that support the weight of the conical, lime green flowers, which fade to cream and then pink as the season progresses. Grate where space is limited, but you want a hard-working and colourful plant, it can also be grown in large pots if kept well watered.

Liriope muscari - An extremely useful plant, which will tolerate a range of conditions including dry shade and drought. Dark green, blade-like leaves provide year-round interest and in autumn, just as other flowers are beginning to fade, vibrant, long-lasting wands of deep violet flowers rise above the foliage. Lily-turf is perfect for edging small, shady spaces - the broad grass-like foliage contrasts beautifully with large leaved plants, or for planting in groups beneath deciduous shrubs.

Astrantia major 'Claret' - This is one of the darkest-flowered astrantias, with deep, ruby red pincushion-like flowers with a ruff of longer bracts than many other varieties. The leaves are pretty too; deeply lobed and dark green. Although it is an old cottage-garden favourite, this astrantia works equally well in contemporary-style plantings. Use towards the front of a sunny, yet moist border, where the flower colour can be fully appreciated.
