Carved Oak Alphabet Stick. (Germany): 1835. Wooden stick carved from dark-stained oak, relief-carved with a Roman-letter alphabet on one side. Two opposite sides are decorated with floral and foliate designs, and carved opposite of the alphabet is the name "Maria Magdalena Buder" and the date 1835. This appears to be a teacher's pointing stick, used as an educational tool. The carving has a naive, folk-art quality, and the stick was perhaps given as a gift from students to their instructor.
