Pope Saint Leo IX, born Bruno of Eguisheim-Dagsburg, was Pope from 12 February 1049 to his death. He was a German aristocrat and a powerful secular ruler of central Italy while holding the papacy.  Leo IX is widely considered the most historically significant German Pope of the Middle Ages. His citing of the Donation of Constantine in a letter to the Patriarch of Constantinople brought about the Great Schism between the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Pope Leo IX was an important German aristocratic Pope of the Middle Ages. Popes attempted to appoint bishops, regulated doctrines, sent missionaries, and wanted centralized government.

Was born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, He is known for starting indulgences.(paying catholic for forgiveness of your sins)  and the writing the Exsurge Domine challenging of Martin Luther 95 Theses.  This was all a plan to show publicly an argument between the differing sides. This way catholic’s chose to create their own rebellion, one that could be more easily controlled and directed.
